Fish and Seafood Health Benefits

Fish and seafood offer us numerous health benefits. Being a heart-healthy food, fish is a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids, low in saturated fat, easy to digest and chocked full of protein, vitamins and minerals. Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to lower the cholesterol and decrease the stickiness of blood platelets, and hence lower the risk of heart disease. Salmon, sardines and tuna are especially crammed full of omega-3 fatty acids which make them a recommended diet to lower cholesterol, lower blood pressure and lead you towards a healthier heart.

Different Methods of Cooking Seafood

Select the right seafood cooking method will help you lower your calorie intake considerably. Calorie intake of your meal is determined by the way the seafood is cooked. Make sure the cooking process does not contribute extra fat to the seafood. Consider some gentle cooking methods such as poaching, steaming, broiling or baking instead of deep-frying. Poaching fish retains its moisture without masking the delicate flavor of the fish, steaming fish involves delicate preparation which is usually accompanied by a savory sauce while broiling and baking offer you hassle-free, quick and easy preparation with flavorful seafood meals and easy cleanup.

Being a delicate seafood, fish tends to be overcooked and dries out quickly. To prevent over-cooking, cook the fish with liquid or add some water towards end of the cooking. Alternatively, apply temperature-controlled high heat cooking method such as grilling or broiling in order to retain its moisture. Once the flesh whitens, becomes opaque and flakes easily, then the fish is perfectly cooked.

When buying fresh fish, pay attention to the freshness of the fish based on the cleanliness, appearance and smell. Keep in mind that don't over-season, let the flavors sing! You can make every seafood meal count towards a healthier you!
